How Do I Fix a 403 Error When Uploading Artwork?

Getting a 403 error when uploading artwork to Bolt Printing's Design Studio? This error may appear when your artwork file doesn't meet certain upload requirements or when the file isn't being submitted correctly. Fortunately, most common artwork upload issues are easy to troubleshoot.

Quick Answer

If you receive a 403 error when uploading artwork, check that your file is under 5MB, your image doesn't exceed 20 inches in width or height, and unnecessary blank space has been removed. Also, try simplifying the filename and uploading a file saved directly on your device.

What Causes a 403 Error When Uploading Artwork?

A 403 error generally indicates that a server has refused a request. When uploading artwork through Bolt Printing's Design Studio, several common file-related issues may contribute to this error.

Here are five things to check before trying your upload again:

  1. File size: Your artwork file exceeds the 5MB upload limit.
  2. Image dimensions: Your artwork exceeds 20 inches in width or height.
  3. Excessive blank space: Your artwork has too much empty space surrounding the actual design.
  4. File naming: Your filename is unusually long or uses a naming format that the system doesn't recognize.
  5. Upload method: You're attempting to upload directly from an email, cloud storage interface, or pasted content instead of selecting a saved file from your device.

How Do I Fix an Artwork File That's Too Large?

The Design Studio allows artwork files up to 5MB. If your file exceeds this limit, you'll need to reduce its size before uploading.

Try the following:

  • Check your file's size before uploading.
  • Export a smaller version of the artwork from your design program.
  • Remove unnecessary image data or excessive blank space.
  • Make sure the design doesn't exceed 20 inches in either dimension.

Helpful Tip: Keep your artwork quality as high as possible when reducing file size. Avoid making your logo blurry or pixelated just to meet the upload requirements.

How Do I Remove Extra Blank Space Around My Artwork?

If your logo or design is surrounded by a large amount of empty space, the Design Studio may have difficulty processing the image.

Open your artwork in an image editing program and crop the image to approximately 1/4 inch from the edges of the actual graphic.

This removes unnecessary blank space while keeping the important parts of your artwork intact.

Helpful Tip: Cropping removes extra space around your design. It shouldn't remove any part of the actual logo, lettering, or artwork.

Can My Artwork Filename Cause an Upload Error?

Yes. Some upload errors occur when filenames are excessively long or contain characters that aren't recognized by the system.

Try renaming your file using a short, simple name with letters, numbers, hyphens, or underscores.

For example, instead of a long filename with special characters, use something straightforward like company-logo.png.

After renaming the file, try uploading it again.

Why Won't My File Upload From Email or Cloud Storage?

The Design Studio needs access to an actual artwork file saved on your device. Copying and pasting an image or attempting to upload directly from an email or Dropbox interface may not work correctly.

For the best results, follow these steps:

  1. Download your artwork from your email or cloud storage account.
  2. Save the file to an accessible folder on your computer or device.
  3. Open the Design Studio and select the My Art upload option.
  4. Browse your device and select the saved artwork file.
  5. Try uploading again to see if the issue has been resolved.

Important: If you've checked all five common issues and still receive a 403 error, the problem may require additional troubleshooting. Our team can help you determine the next steps.
