What Determines the Stitch Count of an Embroidery Design?
When ordering custom embroidered polos, hats, jackets, or other apparel, you may hear the term stitch count. This refers to the total number of stitches needed to recreate your design using embroidery thread. Stitch count helps determine the production time and complexity of your embroidered artwork.
Quick Answer
Embroidery stitch count depends primarily on your design's size, lettering, detail, and the amount of area covered by stitches. Larger designs with extensive lettering or solid fills generally require more stitches. All Bolt Printing embroidered styles include designs up to 8,000 stitches, which covers approximately 85% of the embroidery designs we work with.
What Is Embroidery Stitch Count?
Stitch count is the total number of individual stitches an embroidery machine uses to reproduce your logo, lettering, or artwork on a garment.
Every embroidered design requires a specialized mechanical file that tells the embroidery machine where to place each stitch. Creating this file is a process known as digitizing.
A simple company logo might require relatively few stitches, while a large, detailed design with extensive lettering and filled areas may require significantly more.
What Increases Embroidery Stitch Count?
Several factors can increase the number of stitches required for your custom embroidered design:
- Lots of Lettering: Designs containing multiple words, long business names, or extensive text generally require more stitches.
- Large Areas of Solid Fill: Fully embroidered backgrounds, large shapes, and solid logos require additional stitches to cover the fabric.
- Design Size: A larger version of the same design will typically require more stitches because additional fabric needs to be covered.
- Artwork Detail: Complex shapes, intricate patterns, and detailed artwork can increase the number of stitches needed.
- Stitch Density: How closely stitches are placed together affects the total stitch count and how the finished embroidery looks.
Helpful Tip: Simple, bold logos with clean lettering often work best for embroidered hats, polos, and jackets. Reducing unnecessary details or large solid backgrounds can help keep stitch counts manageable.
Does the Number of Thread Colors Affect Stitch Count?
No, the number of thread colors does not directly determine your embroidery stitch count.
Unlike screen printing, where additional ink colors can affect the printing process, embroidery stitch count is primarily based on the number of stitches required to create the design.
For example, changing a logo from two thread colors to four does not automatically increase the number of stitches if the embroidered shapes and coverage remain the same.
How Many Stitches Are Included with Bolt Printing Embroidery?
All Bolt Printing embroidered styles include designs with up to 8,000 stitches.
This stitch count is sufficient for approximately 85% of the embroidery designs we handle, including many company logos, business names, and other common apparel designs.
Some larger or more detailed designs may exceed 8,000 stitches. Our production team can review your artwork to determine its embroidery requirements.
Good to Know: Just because your logo looks simple doesn't always mean it has a low stitch count. Large filled areas or extensive lettering can require more stitches than expected.
Can I Calculate My Embroidery Stitch Count?
It's difficult to calculate an accurate embroidery stitch count simply by looking at your artwork or measuring its dimensions.
Sometimes our experienced production artists can recognize when a design is likely to have a high stitch count. Other times, the exact count isn't known until the mechanical embroidery file has been created.
The digitizing process determines the stitching pattern, density, and coverage needed to reproduce your artwork.
Our recommendation: Don't worry about calculating the stitch count yourself. Upload your artwork and let our production team evaluate the design.
What Happens After I Submit My Embroidery Design?
When you order custom embroidered apparel from Bolt Printing, our production artists review your artwork and prepare it for embroidery.
- Upload your design: Add your logo or artwork using our online Design Studio.
- Artwork review: Our production team evaluates your design's size, detail, and embroidery requirements.
- Mechanical file creation: Your design is mapped into an embroidery-ready file using specialized digitizing software.
- Proof approval: You'll receive an artwork proof to review and approve before production.
Our goal is to help you get professional-looking embroidered apparel without needing to understand all the technical details behind the embroidery process.
