Designing a custom hat seems simple… until you see the final result.
The biggest mistakes usually come down to one thing: hats aren’t flat, and they don’t have much space.
If you understand those two limitations, you’ll end up with a hat that looks clean, professional, and something people actually want to wear.
Here are 4 simple rules to get it right.
Rule #1: Keep It Simple
- Hats are small
- Embroidery isn’t great with tiny detail
- If you can’t read it from a few feet away → it’s too complex

Rule #2: Go Bigger Than You Think (But Not Too Big)
- Sweet spot = clean and readable
- Oversized = expensive and messy
- Too small = disappears

Rule #3: Avoid the “Danger Zone”
- The seam + curve near the bill = tricky area
- Small text here = bad idea
- Keep important elements centered and clear

Rule #4: Choose the Right Placement
- Front = best for logos
- Side = small + simple only
- Back = subtle works best

Quick Cheat Sheet
- Keep it bold
- Limit words
- Avoid thin lines
- When in doubt → simplify
A great hat design isn’t about adding more…
It’s about removing what doesn’t work.
