How Do I Upload Photos to the Bolt Printing Design Studio?

Want to put your favorite photo, business image, or full-color graphic on a custom T-shirt? Bolt Printing's online Design Studio allows you to upload images directly from your computer or device and add them to your selected apparel.

Whether you're creating custom photo T-shirts for a family reunion, graduation, memorial, birthday, or special event, follow this guide to upload your picture, select the correct color option, and prepare your design for printing.

Quick Answer

To upload a photo to Bolt Printing's Design Studio, select My Art, open the artwork upload tool, and click Browse to choose your image. If you're uploading a full-color photograph, select the Multi-Color icon and confirm the green check mark appears. Click Upload, review the automatically centered design, and select Save Image.

How Do I Upload a Photo to a Custom T-Shirt?

Uploading a photograph or full-color image is simple. Start by choosing the apparel you want to customize and opening Bolt Printing's Design Studio.

Follow the steps below to upload your image and add it to your custom T-shirt design.

Step 1: Open the Design Studio and Select My Art

Once you've selected your T-shirt or other customizable product, open the Design Studio.

Locate the My Art tab in the design tools and select it.

My Art allows you to upload photographs, logos, illustrations, and other artwork you've saved on your computer or device.

Step 2: Choose the Image You Want to Upload

In the My Art section, open the artwork upload tool.

Click Browse or the file selection button displayed on your device.

Navigate to the folder where your photograph is saved, select the image, and click Open or OK.

Your selected image should appear as a small thumbnail in the artwork upload window.

Helpful Tip: Use the highest-quality original photograph available. Enlarging a small or blurry image will not improve its resolution, so start with a clear photo whenever possible.

Step 3: Select the Multi-Color Option

After choosing your image, you'll need to select the colors for your artwork.

If you're uploading a photograph or other full-color image, click the Multi-Color icon.

Unlike a simple one-color logo, a photograph may contain many different colors, shades, and details. The Multi-Color option identifies your artwork as an image containing multiple colors.

When the Multi-Color option has been selected, you should see a green check mark confirming your selection.

Important: Select Multi-Color for Photos

If you're uploading a photograph with multiple colors, gradients, or different shades, use the Multi-Color selection. This helps identify your artwork correctly during the design process. Our production artists will review your uploaded image and prepare it for the appropriate printing process before production.

Step 4: Click Upload

Once you've selected your photograph and confirmed the Multi-Color option, you're ready to upload your artwork.

Click the Upload button and allow the Design Studio to process your image.

Step 5: Review Your Image Placement and Save

Once your image has been uploaded, the Design Studio will automatically center it within the selected design area.

Review how the image appears on your garment. If necessary, adjust its size or position within the available printing area.

When you're satisfied with how it looks, click Save Image.

You can then continue customizing your apparel, save your design for later, or proceed toward placing your order.

What Types of Photos and Images Can I Upload?

Bolt Printing's Design Studio accepts common image formats, allowing you to customize apparel with photographs, digital artwork, and other saved graphics.

Common image formats include:

  • JPG and JPEG: Common formats for photographs saved from cameras and phones.
  • PNG: Useful for photographs, digital graphics, and artwork requiring transparent backgrounds.
  • Other accepted artwork formats: TIFF, GIF, SVG, PDF, AI, and EPS.

For best results, use an image with sufficient resolution for its intended print size. Bolt Printing recommends approximately 150 DPI at the size you plan to print.

Artwork files uploaded through the Design Studio must be 5MB or smaller.

For complete requirements, visit our Artwork and File Guidelines.

Will My Printed Photo Look Exactly Like It Does on My Screen?

Printed colors may appear different from the colors you see on your computer or phone screen.

Screens display colors using light, while printing processes use ink. Screen brightness, device settings, garment color, and the selected printing method can all influence the final appearance.

If specific colors are important to your design, contact our team before approving your artwork proof.

Helpful Tip: Avoid relying on a small, low-resolution image when creating a large photo print. A clear, high-quality original file generally produces better results than an enlarged screenshot or compressed image.

What If My Photo Won't Upload?

If your image isn't uploading, first check that the file is saved on your computer or device and meets the artwork upload requirements.

Try these troubleshooting steps:

  • Check File Size: Make sure your image is no larger than 5MB.
  • Check File Dimensions: Uploaded artwork should not exceed 20 inches in width or height.
  • Use a Simple Filename: Avoid excessively long filenames or unusual characters.
  • Save the File Locally: Download the photograph onto your device before attempting to upload it.
  • Try Another Browser: If the Design Studio isn't responding, try opening it in a different browser.

If you receive an upload error, our 403 Error Uploading Artwork guide provides additional troubleshooting steps.

Does Bolt Printing Review My Uploaded Photo Before Printing?

Yes! Bolt Printing reviews uploaded artwork before production and provides an artwork proof for customer approval.

After placing your order, our professional production artists prepare a digital proof showing your design's placement and dimensions.

You'll receive an email when your proof is ready. Review the artwork carefully and approve it or request changes before printing begins.

For detailed instructions, visit our How to Review and Approve Your Artwork Proof guide.

Important: What You Approve Is What We Print! Always review your image placement, size, colors, and overall appearance before approving your proof. Once approved, your order moves into production and changes cannot be made.

How Do I Upload a Logo Instead of a Photograph?

If you're uploading a company logo, simple graphic, or artwork with a limited number of colors, our general upload tutorial explains the process for selecting individual embellishment colors and positioning your design.

Read our How to Upload a Design to the Design Studio guide for detailed instructions.
