How to Use ChatGPT to Create Your Own Custom T-Shirt Design

We’re seeing more and more customers using ChatGPT to help design custom t-shirts - - and it’s awesome.

Whether it’s for a family reunion, a school celebration, a nonprofit fundraiser, or a small business event, AI tools make it easier than ever to come up with clever slogans and simple graphics that work great on a shirt.

Here’s how to get started:

Step 1: Come up with a design idea

Use ChatGPT to brainstorm ideas. Try a prompt like:

“Give me 5 funny family reunion t-shirt slogans that would work with a simple one-color graphic.”
Or
“Suggest a school spirit t-shirt idea with a mascot, a short slogan, and bold text.”

Want something more serious or inspirational?

“Create a motivational t-shirt slogan for a nonprofit walk-a-thon, with an idea for a simple icon.”

Keeping your design to one or two colors not only improves print quality, but also keeps production efficient. This makes simple AI-generated artwork a great fit for budget custom t-shirts, where clean designs deliver strong results at a lower cost.

Step 2: Generate the image

Once you’ve got the concept, use an AI image generator (like ChatGPT, DALL·E, Midjourney, or Canva’s Magic Media) with a prompt like:

“Create a 1-color line art design of a school mascot (eagle) with bold shapes. Sized for 12 inches wide. High resolution, PNG with transparent background.”

For best print results:

  • Keep the design in 1-2 colors

  • Use a transparent background

  • Aim for about 12" wide at 300 DPI (3600 pixels)

For best print results, file type matters just as much as resolution. Our guide on vector vs bitmap: why it matters explains how different file formats impact print clarity and scalability.
AI tools can sometimes generate overly detailed designs. Our design tip: avoid tiny details explains how simplifying artwork helps ensure your design prints clearly and remains readable on apparel.

You can upload your design directly to our Design Studio — and if you need help making sure it’s print-ready, we’re here for you.

Remember background colors don't really matter - but saving on a white or transparent background is ideal.
If the design is in black - we can easily recolor it during the proof process.

Happy creating!
